In their introduction to the English translation of the French poet Jean Daive’s memoir and poetic meditation, Robert Kaufman (Comparative Literature; Program in Critical Theory) and Philip Gerard (UC Berkeley Ph.D., Comparative Literature & Program in Critical Theory) provide historical, cultural and aesthetic contexts for Daive's account of his friendship and collaborations with the German-language poet Paul Celan (1920-1970).
They are joined by Ann Smock (French).
