Johnny Laforêt (Princeton U.) "The place of Haitian Creole and French in the Linguistic Landscape of Haiti: A Case Study of Haitians Interacting Online"
12 pm - 1 pm
Online

With the availability of Internet connections and smartphones in almost every corner of Haiti, the ease of communication among Haitians has greatly increased. This new reality has also helped us to better understand the linguistic landscape of the country. In fact, already in my 2023 paper on the linguistic landscape of Port-au-Prince, I was able to show how the two official languages were portrayed in the physical landscape of the capital. However, the Internet has made it even easier for me to see Haitians’ patterns of the language uses in their daily communications, with Haitian Creole being the language par excellence recorded in those online interactions. This presentation will provide an update on the linguistic landscape of Haiti while focusing on the languages used by Haitians during online shows and their daily interactions.
