We are a French department that seeks to actively engage in anti-racist work in our teaching, scholarship, and spaces of learning. In our department, scholars and teachers promote the study of French language and Francophone literatures and cultures in a way that allows us to reconsider Frenchness in the light of histories of colonialism, immigration, and racialization. This means that we treat non-standard language use with respect and frequently foreground the work of minoritized French-language authors. We listen to and support those who have historically been suppressed in French Studies.
