What does it mean to sound French? Is it different from sounding Francophone? In this course, students learn to describe the phonological systems of the French-speaking world, while refining their production and perception of French sounds. There is a particular interest in understanding how sounds interact with other areas of language and expression such as grammar, vocabulary, gesture, emotional states, and social contexts. The final part of the course studies the social effects of hearing and speaking in different ways in the French-speaking world; possible topics include deafness and hard of hearing, muteness, language disorders, sign languages, and silence. This course is taught in French.
