In 2023, we will mark the twentieth anniversary of the passing of the lesbian activist, writer and philosopher Monique Wittig (1935-2003), as well as the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of her Corps lesbien, with a two-part international conference: « Monique Wittig : Twenty Years Later / Monique Wittig : Vingt ans après ». Hosted jointly by the Department of French at the University of California – Berkeley and the Institut des Études Genre at the Université de Genève, this conference seeks to encourage new directions in scholarship on Wittig and to stimulate transatlantic and international exchange about her work.
The Berkeley leg of the conference will take place on 17–18 March 2023 and the Geneva one, on 27–28 June 2023.
In recent years, Monique Wittig’s work and thought have been the object of a revival of interest in the academy and activism. We wish to build on this context to explore new avenues of research on her work and to interrogate the contemporary resonances of Wittigian thought.
